SNU Presidential Election

Professor OH Yeon-Cheon (Graduate School of Public Administration, GSPA) received the most votes in the 25th Seoul National University presidential election on May 3rd.

Following Professor Oh, who had 880.3 votes (52.3%), Professor Oh Se-Jung of the College of Natural Sciences received 634.6 votes (37.6%).

The final choice is to be made among the two top-ranked presidential candidates with the President’s approval. Out of a total of 2,766 eligible voters, 2,512 faculty and staff participated in the election, rendering the voting rate 90.8%.

Having graduated from Seoul National University in 1974, Professor Oh was appointed a professor at the Graduate School of Public Administration (GSPA) after obtaining both master’s and Ph.D. degrees from New York University (NYU). He served as dean of GSPA for 3 years and contributed to establishing Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and the Bio-Max Research Center. His major campaign pledges include the SNU S.T.A.R. (Superior Teaching Advanced Research) Program, which emphasizes the importance of undergraduate education.

The current election system allows each professor 1 vote while providing staff members with 0.1 votes per person. The final appointee is chosen by the President between the two candidates with the most votes. However, this election system is expected to change after corporatization of the university next year.
