SNU Students Step Up to Become Global Leaders

SNU's Career Development Center has been providing SNU students with career guidance through programs that build confidence and provide pragmatic education to help students develop themselves into successful candidates for leading positions in the changing economic environment, which is continuously departing from tradition and embracing new trends such as eco-friendly development and digitalization.

The 2010 winter vacation was filled with global leadership programs for SNU students both domestically and abroad.

The 8th Global Talent Program (GTP), hosted by the SNU Career Development Center, commenced in Sydney and ran from February 22nd to the 24th. The conference, which focused on the topic of"The Environment and Energy," had science majors and graduate students visit various Australian multinational corporations and public institutions to find out about opportunities for internships and employment.

The participants met with researchers and representatives from Australia's Common Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), the major global investor Macquarie, and the private electric company Australia Gas Light. They discussed and proposed new business models fit for the world's transforming energy and environmental conditions, which were evaluated very highly.

The students also visited the headquarters of Earth Hour, the famous movement for energy conservation, and the University of New South Wales (NSW) to engage in discussion about the international importance of environment and energy issues. They were also able to personally feel the potency of international networks when they met with representatives from Hyundai Motors in Sydney, the KOTRA Sydney branch, the Korea Consulate General in Sydney, and the SNU alumni association in Sydney.

The Career Development Center began providing vacation programs abroad in 2007 to help students groom themselves into talent needed in the global job market. Beginning with a finance program in Hong Kong, the program has sent excelling students to Singapore to study innovation, to Silicon Valley to research IT, to Dubai to discuss construction and real estate, and to Switzerland to learn about international organizations.

While the 8th GTP was in progress in Australia, the 4th SNU-In Job Camp was held in Korea. The camp attracted heated attention, with the number of applicants doubling the number of seats.

The camp included a special lecture by Samsung Electronics Executive Director AHN Seung-jun titled"Talent Desired by Corporations in a Changing Digital Business Environment," among many other lectures by human resource managers from corporations including SK, LG, Hyundai, SC First Bank, and Yahoo Korea that focused on increasing competitiveness as job candidates.

The camp also invited employment and image-making specialists to share their know-how on speech and presentation, as well as techniques for writing successful applications and preparing for interviews. Graduates of the camp who are now employed with top corporations shared their stories with this year's camp participants, to enthusiastic response.

JEON Chi-hong (Senior, Dept. of Food and Animal Biotechnology) commented,"The camp's content and quality were extremely well-planned. It was very helpful. It was different from similar programs in that it specifically focused on the mistakes fellow SNU students have made during interviews. The advice was pragmatic and precise."

The job camp was created by the Career Development Center in 2008 in response to students' demands for applicable job training, and is held every winter and summer break.
