President Brian CANTOR of York University visited SNU President OH Yeon Cheon and signed a student exchange agreement on September 28.
York University in the UK was ranked 96th in the 2011 QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings and is particularly strong in the fields of medicine, chemistry, social sciences and public administration. In particular, it is one of the top five universities in the UK in the field of chemistry, possessing the largest faculty size of 50 and having produced 3 Nobel Prize winners.
President Cantor expressed anxiety about the widespread passiveness of British students in participating in the study abroad program and asserted that he would strongly encourage student exchange taking the agreement with SNU as a source of momentum. President Cantor also mentioned the world renowned academic competence of SNU and requested further support for joint research in the fields of chemistry, environmental science, and social policy. He also introduced himself as ‘a friend of Korea’ who has visited Korea more than 15 times and has served as an advisor since the beginning of POSCO, and asked President OH to visit York University and become 'a friend of the UK' himself.
President OH said that one of the major projects for the globalization of SNU is to push forward the actual exchange of students with major universities abroad such as York University, and agreed to cooperate as much as possible to support the progress of joint research between the two universities in the future.
Following this agreement SNU can start sending exchange students to York University beginning the second semester of 2012.
