SNU recently moved up 8 slots in the 2011 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings from last year's 50th, which is its highest placing since QS began producing the rankings in 2004.
SNU also received a better evaluation in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, which is based on both opinions from experts and citations, compared to 2010.
Specifically, SNU ranked 31st in Social Sciences, 33rd in Engineering and Technology, 35th in Natural Sciences, 41st in Life Sciences & Medicine, and 43rd in Arts and Humanities.
The six indicators used for the QS World University Rankings are academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), citations per faculty member (20%), faculty student ratio (20%), and international orientation (10%-- i.e. number of international faculty and students).
For academic reputation, which shows how globally a university is recognized, SNU took 33rd place by receiving a total of 93.3 points. This increase in the awareness of SNU is mainly explained by the vigorous academic activities of professors in various fields. The academic reputation indicator is equivalent to the formerly used"academic peer review."
