SNU’s Institute of Environmental Protection & Safety (IEPS, http://ieps.snu.ac.kr) conducted training sessions on radiation safety for approximately 140 SNU members -- graduate students, research students, and faculty -- from August 9 to 12.

Those who received the training are currently performing or are scheduled to perform experiments involving radioactive materials or radiation instruments.

This training is legally mandatory based on the Atomic Energy Law, which defines “Radiation Workers” as people who are being exposed to or may at some point be exposed to radiation during the course of their employment. The law makes safety education mandatory and states that radiation workers receive twenty hours of safety training before entering the initial radiation laboratory and an additional six hours of training annually. IEPS is providing regular safety education classes in February and August each year, and regularly reporting the results to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

As of July 2011, over five hundred radiation workers are doing experiments in ninety-six radiation labs authorized by the Minister of Education, Science and Technology across the SNU campus.
