SNU Law School announced the amendment of its regulations that intensifies the disciplinary action to be taken against underperforming students, including disenrollment of students who fail to pass more than two courses.

The law school announced that, according to the decision on ‘Intensification of Disciplinary Policy' made by the Law School Committee on January 12, 2011, it will revise the regulations regarding low grades and the retaking of courses.

First, law school students will be held back if their average GPA for that academic year is less than or equal to 2.0. This is a stricter regulation than that of the medical school's. However, unlike the medical school, where only one F can hold a student back, law school students will be an exception to this rule.

Second, the grades for summer and winter semesters are to be included in the average GPA of that academic year. The one-academic-year average GPA of students who took a leave of absence is calculated as the average GPA over the last semester before taking a leave and the current semester.

Third, students of the law school whose current semester's GPA is less than or equal to 2.0, or whose grades include more than 2 Fs (6 credits), are to be put on academic probation. Under the previous regulation, students were expelled if 3 academic probations were accumulated, but the revised regulation states that they will be expelled only if they are put on academic probation for three 'consecutive' semesters.

Fourth, students of the law school may not be enrolled for more than 5 years. Under the previous rule, the maximum enrollment period in pursuit of a master's degree from the general graduate school, dental and medical school, and business school were 4, 8, and 3 years, respectively. But there was no such regulation for the law school.
These revised regulations were formally announced on July 15, 2011 by the SNU president.
