Seoul National University produced the most holders of American doctoral degrees of any university outside the U.S. between 1999 and 2003.
The University of Chicago conducted a study on recipients of U.S. doctoral degrees sponsored by U.S. government and the Chronical of Higher Education has reported the summery on October 5.
According to the study, there were 1,655 holders of U.S. doctoral degrees who had been undergraduates at SNU.
Even including American universities, SNU came second only to the University of California, Berkeley, which produced 2,175 doctoral degree holders.
National Taiwan University was the second non-U.S. university to produce the most American PhDs with 1,190, and China's Beijing University came next with 1,153.
Other Korean universities at the top of the list were Yonsei University, which came fifth with 720, and Korea University, which came eighth with 445 PhDs.
Asian countries had a strong presence on the list, with China, as a whole producing the most number of U.S. PhDs with 4,854. Korea followed with 3,143, and Taiwan and India came next with 1,436 and 1,177.
