Professor PAIK Jin-hyun at SNU Graduate School of International Studies was elected judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on March 6.

PAIK will serve as a member of the tribunal until September 30, 2014, replacing his predecessor, PARK Choon-ho, who died of blood cancer last November.

A foreign ministry official said that PAIK won support from 113 out of 155 member countries in a competition where Paik and his Indonesian rival Nugroho Wisnumurti made bids for the post.

Hamburg-based ITLOS is an intergovernmental organization created in 1982 to settle disputes between members states.
