Jaha Pond, located near the College of Humanities, is well known as the most picturesque spot on Gwanak campus.

What is less known is that the name of the pond originates from a great scholar of the eighteenth century, Shin Wi.

Jaha was Shin's pen name and means 'purple mist'.

As a sophisticated Confucian, Jaha was both a talented poet and painter.

He composed an illustrated poem about Jaha Pond which describes its seasonal changes.

From this poem, the unnamed pond got its name as Jaha-yeon which means 'pond surrounded by purple mist'.

Professor Tae-jin Lee, Dean of the College of Humanities, recently contructed two stone monuments around the pond which are inscribed with Jaha's drawing and poem.

The president and other senior staff of the University gathered around the Jaha Pond and celebrated the construction and unveiling of the monument.
