Various Mentoring Programs

Seoul National University is offering its students diverse mentoring programs that connect graduates and current students of SNU, in the effort to help students receive realistic and practical advice. Three major mentoring programs that are helping students out include the AMP Mentoring Program of CBA (The College of Business & Administration), the Women’s Mentoring Program of the College of Engineering, and the Work Experience Program of SNU Career Development Center.

◆ AMP Mentoring Program of CBA
This program, which was launched in March of 2007, had its first official meeting on October 8th. Mentors who are taking AMP (Advanced Management Program) courses and their mentees, 200 in total, participated in the orientation as well as group meetings. During the orientation, professor Chul-soon Park emphasized that this AMP Mentoring Program will not just be a program to help students get jobs, but it will be an opportunity for the students to get advice that will help them throughout their lives. After the orientation the mentors and mentees divided into five groups and shared their ideas about their lives and careers. After meeting the mentors, a student said"Even though they did not say a lot, their wisdom was evident and will be crucial in my life," and remarked that she would take part in this mentoring program again during the following semester.

◆ Women’s Mentoring Program of the College of Engineering
This mentoring program started in the spring of 2007. Alumni and undergraduates gathered and talked about their everyday lives in school and at work. This program consists of both online and offline meetings. For offline meetings, mentors and mentees get together once every vacation officially and use these gatherings as a chance to hear what the seniors have to say. This program meets the needs of many female students in that it offers them a place where they can talk about the problems many women face, as the College of Engineering is mostly composed of male students and there is not much opportunity for them to talk about these issues. During fall semester of 2007, the offline meeting took place on Nov. 16th.

◆ Work Experience Program of SNU Career Development Center
As its name implies, this program gives students opportunities to experience graduates' jobs. It is an intermediate course and the program proceeds with thirty juniors and seniors divided into 7 mentoring groups. The program runs for 7 weeks, and is composed of STRONG Work Test, interviews, and visits to the workplaces of alumni. After the workplace visits students select a topic and make presentations using Powerpoint. Although this program recruited only women until spring semester 2006, as a result of more and more male students applying for the program, the proportion of female and male participants is now almost equal. The mentees of this program have said that being able to get more friendly with the mentors and obtain very practical information from them is the biggest advantage of this mentoring program compared to others, especially as the mentors in this program are younger.

SNU is trying in many ways to build an intrapersonal network between SNU students and graduates, facilitating the connection of students with alumni who are working in many different fields and who are subsequently able to share very useful information with them as they prepare to embark on their own various careers.
