College Life Counselor, The Center for Campus Life

College Life Counselor, The Center for Campus Life & Culture

The Center for Campus Life & Culture of Seoul National University provides students with an exclusive counseling program each semester to help them adjust to campus life smoothly. There have been an increasing number of students experiencing uneasiness and frustration as they encounter their new environment called"college". The counseling program will help students to achieve a delightful college life along with academic success.

Don't Be A Procrastinator Program: Breaking the Habit of Procrastination

This program is designed for students who have a serious problem of procrastinating. For example, they may put off doing assignments until very close to their deadline. About 10 to 15 participants meet for two hours every week to observe their time management skills and discuss how they can improve them during this 8-week program. One past participant testified,"In the past, I kept putting off what I supposed to do and felt uncomfortable while I was hanging out. I now know that the days I was procrastinating were truly unproductive, and I am glad I participated in this program which I should have known about earlier."

Face-2-Face with Loneliness Program: Understanding and Overcoming Loneliness

This program helps students understand and deal with loneliness, which has long been thought of as a"negative feeling". Each student gets a chance to talk about loneliness and think about how to overcome it. The program will include four sessions. In the first session, a leader of the group presents information regarding concepts, causes and varieties of loneliness. In the second to fourth sessions, participants discuss their experiences of loneliness and find out different ways they can overcome it. The purpose of the program is to let participants approach loneliness from a different angle and acknowledge that loneliness is neither to be afraid of nor to be avoided.

Let's Talk! Program: Learning New Ways of Conversing

Based on a non-violence conversation method first developed in the U.S., this program has been adapted for use in the Korean environment. The program focuses on developing students' communication skills and abilities to cope with such situations as others hurting their feelings with critical and offensive comments. One past participant said,"In this program, I learned that accepting others is a key to good communication skill. I often had preconceptions when I talked with people, but now I communicate with others with a more open mind." The program runs for 8 to 10 weeks with a small group of 10 students.

Besides the programs mentioned above, many other programs are offered this semester such as a nervousness elimination program, social skill improvement program and campus mentoring program. The Center for College Life & Culture advertises these programs through portal sites, homepages, or posters, and recruits participants around the beginning and end of each new semester. The Center will keep developing various programs that help students enjoy their college lives at SNU to the fullest.
