The Center for Students with Disabilities Symposium: A First Step Toward a Campus for All

In celebration of the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Center for Students with Disabilities hosted a symposium on December 3rd, focusing on the theme "Disability Access and Mobility Rights at SNU's Gwanak Campus." The event marked the new beginning of the Center, which was established as an independent department under the Office of Student Affairs in July. Congratulatory messages were delivered via video by members of the National Assembly Go Min Jung and Choi Bo-yun, who have actively proposed policies to support students with disabilities.

The symposium featured presentations from various members, including a keynote speech by Professor Park Sohyun from the Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering at the College of Engineering, who presented the results of her research on "wheelchair mobility and accessibility at SNU’s Gwanak campus." Over the past year, Professor Park developed the SNU BBF (Barely Barrier-Free) Wheelability checklist to assess the accessibility of the campus for wheelchair users.

In addition, an exhibition, screening, and awards ceremony were held for the entries of the Disability Awareness and Education Content Contest, which ran from October 10 to November 15. These entries will be used in future disability awareness training programs on campus.

Professor Park Hye Jun, Director of the Center for Students with Disabilities, explained, “Creating a disability-friendly environment is the biggest challenge facing both Seoul National University and the Center. A disability-friendly environment is one where all members, including people with disabilities, can feel comfortable. I hope this symposium will be the first step in addressing both physical and social accessibility issues, and in making SNU a warmer and more inclusive community.”
