On August 1-3 and 8-10, SNU College of Natural Sciences and the SNU Science Outreach Center held the Natural Sciences Experience Camp. First hosted in 2010, the camp has been offered twice per year since 2017 in response to rising requests for additional sessions. The camp is designed for second year high school students interested in the fields of Math and Statistics, Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Science. Every year, SNU selects a total of 200 students, comprised of 40 students each from the five respective fields of natural sciences, to participate. Applications are restricted to those who are not enrolled in science high schools, therefore providing more opportunities for students who do not have easy access to science equipment and resources.
The camp allows the students to enhance their understanding of the natural sciences by attending lectures given by distinguished SNU professors and participating in science experiments using high quality lab equipment. Mentoring sessions led by current SNU students also provide them with opportunities to get a closer look at what it is like to pursue a career in the natural sciences. The camp’s curriculum also includes discussion sessions regarding the natural sciences, where students can exchange ideas with friends who share the same interests.
The key topics for this year’s program were: The Wonders of Math: Analysis of Big Data (Math and Statistics), The Conversation Between Music and Physics (Physics and Astronomy), Molecular Orbital Theory, Light-Matter Interactions (Chemistry), A Look into a Cell Using Fluorescent Protein, CSI:SNU - DNA Fingerprinting (Biology), and Earthquakes, Dinosaurs, Is Korea Safe? (Earth Science).
