SNU Honors Three ‘Engineering Students Whom We Look Up To’

In celebration of SNU’s 70th anniversary, the College of Engineering held a ceremony on November 23 honoring three ‘engineering student whom we look up to.’ The College of Engineering honored these former SNU students with a bust of each. The alumni honored at this ceremony were the former Director of Sinyang Cultural Foundation, CHUNG Suk Gyoo, the Director of the Haedong Science Foundation, KIM Chung Shik, and the President of the ILJIN Group, HUH Chin Kyu.

These three SNU alumni have all contributed to the engineering industry in South Korea in progressive and diverse ways.

CHUNG Suk Gyoo graduated from the department of Chemical Engineering in 1957 and helped developed the creation of rubber products with the Taesong Chemical Company.

Kim Chung Shik graduated from Communication Engineering in 1956 and created Dae Duck Electronics. Through developing the PCB (Printed Circuit Boards) production market locally, Kim spurred Korea’s electronics industry.

HUH Chin Kyu graduated from the Department of Metallurgical Engineering in 1963 and founded the ILJIN Group. He was also responsible for the localization and expansion of the parts industry in the manufacture of synthetic diamonds. In addition to his contributions to the industrial sector, Huh has donated money to the SNU’s Research Institute of Advanced Materials to foster and support talent in the sciences.

SNU President SUNG Nak-in, Dean of Engineering LEE Kun Woo, and friends and family members of the three recipients were present at the unveiling ceremony.
