The Subtle Energy of Matter- Italian Modern Sculpture

Jul 21, 2008 - Sep 05, 2008

Under the sponsorship of MoA, the Italy Cultural Center in Seoul, the Embassy of Italy in Seoul and the Torino-based Italian foundation for culture and arts I.G.A.V (Istituto Garuzzo per le Arti Visive), a large scale exhibition is being held under the theme of 'Italy in Korea' in the SNU MOA. In this exhibition audiences will be able to enjoy various Italian designs, arts, and fashion that the Italy Cultural Center in Seoul is actively introducing to Korea.

The exhibition presents about 50 pieces of work by 31 modern Italian sculptors who have experimented with and pioneered the infinite expressive possibilities of various materials through their works, whether it be a traditional marble sculpture or an installation piece experimenting with neon lights. Many of the pieces have a Marcel Duchamp-esque feeling, as they take on the appearance of items from daily life, such as a handbag, a cup, a toilet, a dustpan, or a wooden board. However, the unconventional materials that make up these objects invite the audience will be able to discover new, secret meaning behind each object imbedded by the modern Italian sculptors. Cliche-like forms such as a dustpan forming an arabesque pattern with dust around it, and rainbow colored light being projected onto a dark wall have been transformed into objet d'art with new stories to be told.

This exhibition comprehensively exhibits works of art from the 1960s Italian Arte Povera trends to those of the more recent trends where the work disappears as time passes, to experimental pieces, exploring objects, their characteristics and their change of energy.

Exhibition Date: July 21st ~ September 5th

Exhibition Location: MoA galleries #1, 2, 6 and the B2 Core Lounge
