Presentation Synopsis
In this presentation, we will describe the overall goals of the University of Michigan Global Scholars Program, provide an overview of the Global Understanding course, and share some of the pedagogical benefits of offering a Global Understanding course. The overall goals of the Michigan Global Scholars Program is to: 1) create a space for international and U.S. students to have meaningful interaction on campus outside of class, 2) to provide a class in which our students can engage in intercultural exchange with students at other institutions by using technology, and 3) to enhance students' study abroad experiences by promoting intercultural competency. The Global Understanding course addresses the second of these goals and uses video conference and online chat technology to link students with other college students around the world. Some of the pedagogical benefits of this class include: encouragement of developing college level academic English written and verbal communication skills, enhancement of intercultural exchange via written, verbal, and non-verbal communication, and allowing students to develop identities as"cultural ambassadors" for their respective institutions. Administrative benefits of this program allows for students who do not participate in study abroad to have intercultural exposure at minimal cost. For students who do study abroad, the Global Understanding course better prepares them for both informal and formal academic interactions in a way that is difficult to achieve in a traditional classroom setting.
