Nov 13, 2008

‘The 20th Student Council of Kwanaksa’ has been showing movies as a monthly event to enhance the culture lives of dormitory students. This month’s movie will be Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus, a renowned movie with numerous numbers of awards.

Coming soon on November 13th 8 p.m.

At the Kwanaksa Recreation Center (Bldg #910 2nd floor)

Amadeus is a 1984 drama directed by Miloš Forman. Based on Peter Shaffer's stage play Amadeus, the film is based very loosely on the rivalry between two composers in the court of Austrian Emperor Joseph II--official royal composer Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), and the younger but superior prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce).

The conceit is absolutely delicious: Salieri secretly loathes Mozart's crude and bratty personality, but is astounded by the beauty of his music. That's the heart of Salieri's torment--although he's in a unique position to recognize and cultivate both Mozart's talent and career, he's also consumed with envy and insecurity in the face of such genius. That such magnificent music should come from such a vulgar little creature strikes Salieri as one of God's cruelest jokes, and it drives him insane.

Amadeus creates peculiar and delightful contrasts between the impeccably re-created details of its lavish period setting and the jarring modern tone of its dialogue and performances--all of which serve to remind us that these were people before they became enshrined in historical and artistic legend.

The film was nominated for 53 awards and received 40, including 8 Academy Awards (including Best Picture), 4 BAFTA Awards, 4 Golden Globes, and a DGA Award. In 1998, Amadeus was ranked the 53rd best American movie by the American Film Institute on its AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movies list.

We will be offering free drinks, snacks and popcorns to all movie viewers, so we hope you don’t miss the wonderful chance to watch this beautifully made, moving work of art. The film will keep your eyes and ears busy with its fantastic color and scale, with lavish costumes and wonderful architecture, on the basis of music by the 18th-century musical genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
