International Speech Contest and Song Festival in Commemoration of the 45th Anniversary of Language Education Institute at Seoul National University

The Language Education Institute at Seoul National University is hosting an international speech contest and song festival in commemoration of its forty-fifth anniversary. We are actively encouraging all the SNUers’ participation in the contest. The aim of this event is to raise your interest in diverse languages and cultures, and promote more interaction between Koreans and foreigners. The president of the university plans on coming to the award ceremony to present awards, including the presidential award, to all the prizewinners. In addition, the institute is hosting its birthday party in the front yard of the University Cultural Center from 12:00 to 13:00 on May 14th, Wednesday. Please come and join us for the lunch!

1. Outline of the Contest

(Students, Students at International Education Center, Lecturers, University Staff, & Professors)

(3) Program and Schedule:

10:00~17:00 English Speech Contest, Museum Auditorium
- Wednesday, May 14^th
10:00~13:00 Korean Speech Contest, University Cultural Center Auditorium
12:00~13:00 Lunch Party for all the SNUers
13:00~15:00 Second Foreign Language Speech Contest
15:00~17:00 International Song Festival
17:00~18:00 Award Ceremony and Raffle Drawing

(4) Awards:
a. Seoul National University President’s awards and extra prizes are given to all the contestants.
b. Free or discounted certificates (worth 150,000 won) for fall term lectures at Language Education Institute are given to all contestants.
c. There will be plenty of raffle prizes, which will be drawn at all times, for all event participants.
d. Excellent cheering awards and prizes will be presented to the top three cheering teams.

2. International Speech Contest
(1) Qualification:
Koreans may enter a foreign language contest and foreigners may enter the Korean
speech contest.

Koreans
Division 1: Koreans who have never resided in a foreign country, or have resided for less than six months.
Division 2: Koreans who have resided in a foreign country for 6 to 24 months. (Excluding before reaching his or her school age)
Division 3: Koreans who have resided in a foreign country for more than 2 years. (Excluding before reaching his or her school age)

Foreigners
Division 1: Foreigners who have resided inKorea for less than one year.
Division 2: Foreigners who have resided inKorea for more than one year.

(2) Schedule:
Monday, April 21^st ~ Thursday, May 1st: Registration
Tuesday, May 6^th: Preliminary Round
Friday, May 9^th: Speech Manuscript Deadline
Tuesday, May 13th: English Speech Contest
Wednesday, May 14^th: Korean, Second Foreign Language Contest

(3) Preliminary Rounds: 4~5 minute interview (if there are many applicants)

(4) The Final Contest:
Manuscript: Four-Minute Presentation
(It must be prepared by the contestant but may be corrected by third parties)
Presentation Topics:
a. person or an event that has significantly influenced you or
b. opinion of a socially or academically interesting or important issue.
Notes: The contestant’s original opinion must be clearly revealed in the presentation.
The contestant may not refer to his or her manuscript during the presentation.

The Excellence Award: An Electronic Dictionary (Casio EW series)
The Encouragement Award: An MP3 Player (iPod nano)

3. International Song Festival

(1) Qualification: Koreans may enter the contest with a foreign pop song and foreigners with a Korean song (a group in a team may enter the contest).

(2) Schedule:
Monday, April 21^st ~ Thursday, May 1st: Registration
Tuesday, May 6^th: Preliminary Round
Wednesday, May 14th: Final Round

(3) The Details of Award: Seoul National University President’s Award
The Grand Prize: 1,000,000 won
The Gold Prize: 700,000 won
The Silver Prize: 500,000 won
The Bronze Prize: 300,000 won
