Migrant Women in International Marriage, Issues and Prospects

Nov 30, 2007

[International Conference] Migrant Women in International Marriage, Issues and Prospects

As recent statistics show that more than 10% of marriages in Korea are intermarriages, Korea itself is being transformed into a multi-racial and/or multi-cultural society rapidly. This experience of the fusion of the unprecedented migrants is giving a challenge to an entire Korean society as well as individual families.
To actively cope with this new social construction, it is important to broaden our horizon, that is, to investigate not only the experiences of intermarriage families but the social changes in nation, in civil society, and in global economy. Especially, gender relation interlocks with various issues raised by intermarriages, it is, therefore, necessary to look for a new outlook while examining this social change in a standpoint of gender relation.
The Institute for Gender Research at Seoul National University has organized International Conference to examine a variety of issues and questions within the augmentation of intermarriage in a gender perspective. The goal and the purpose of this conference are to provide the framework of a comparative study by arguing the experiences of Japanese intermarried women and the experiences of Taiwanese intermarried women together with those of Korean intermarried women.
As an academic contributor, we feel you will find the event beneficial and informative. We will welcome and appreciate any comments you may have, as they are the best means to broaden the prospects. We look forward to your participation.
