2025 1st Kyujanggak Korean Studies Workshop Academic Conference: An Era of Education for Democracy, Nation, and Morality (Saturday, July 5, 13:30–18:00)

Jul 05, 2025

Hello,

This is the Academic Education Division of the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies.
We would like to inform you about the upcoming 1st Academic Conference and kindly ask for your interest and participation.

  1. Date and Time: Saturday, July 5, 2025, 13:30–18:00

  2. Venue: Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies (Building 103), 4th Floor, Grand Conference Room (Room 444)

  3. Theme: The Era of Education for Democracy, Nation, and Morality: Discourses and Realities of Korean Education in the 1950s

  4. Purpose of the Academic Conference:

This conference aims to explore the discourses surrounding Korean education and the actual educational conditions during the 1950s, a period corresponding to the formative years of Korean society—from the liberation in 1945 to around the April 19 Revolution. Korean education in the 1950s, so-called, has until recently received little attention not only in education (and its history) but also in history and the social sciences. As such, much remains unknown about its actual state. This research gap poses a significant barrier to understanding the historical dimensions of Korea’s unique educational issues. This conference is one attempt to overcome that obstacle, presenting innovative questions raised by emerging and early-career scholars focusing on 1950s Korean education. The presentations also reflect the outcomes of collaborative readings of educational magazines such as Chosun Education and New Education, as well as detailed investigations into textbooks and the circumstances surrounding school establishments. Through these presentations, we hope to inspire renewed interest and insights regarding the historical formation of modern Korean education.
