June 16 (Monday) Institute of Social Sciences Methodology Seminar 'Path to Self-Sufficiency Through Entrepreneurship' (Prof. Jiwon Hwang, Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management)

Jun 16, 2025

The Institute of Social Sciences conducts in-depth research on various methodologies and fosters interdisciplinary exchange through its Methodology Seminar Series. The 4th Methodology Seminar of the Spring 2025 semester will be held as follows, and we encourage active participation.

<Path to Self-Sufficiency Through Entrepreneurship: Strategies for Reentry into the Labor Market for Former Inmates>

This study examines the trend of former inmates in the United States choosing entrepreneurship as a means to avoid employment discrimination and achieve self-sufficiency. An analysis of the U.S. National Longitudinal Survey of Youth data shows that individuals with incarceration experience are more likely to start businesses compared to those without, with Black former inmates facing higher employment discrimination and therefore exhibiting a stronger tendency toward entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship has been found to lead to higher income and lower recidivism rates compared to traditional employment. Additional analysis of U.S. Census and tax data reveals financial barriers encountered by former inmates during the startup process, emphasizing the need for structural support from the government and society to realize entrepreneurship as a true means of self-sufficiency.
