# Topic: Closed loop visual cortical prosthetics for the blind and the role of machine learning
# Abstract :
Visual prosthesis is an important unsolved problem in the field of biomedical engineering. The first experiments were in 1968, but despite huge progress in biomedical technologies, clinical success is still in the future. One of the fundamental issues to be solved is that the visual system in blind individuals becomes “noisy”. Achieving high quality signal transfer is thus as challenging as whispering to your friend in the middle of a rock-concert! As such, here in Newcastle we are exploring a new approach, using closed loop stimulation to improve effective visual contrast.
