About the Talk
Living alone is no longer a rare or special case—it has become a common way of life. Yet, social perceptions of single-person households are often polarized: they are either seen as financially vulnerable or as enjoying a luxurious, carefree lifestyle.
Drawing on over 100 in-depth interviews conducted over the past four years with unmarried individuals living alone, the speaker explores several key questions:
-
In modern societies, where production and reproduction are traditionally centered around the family, what does it mean for people without families to work and “reproduce”?
-
If living alone is supposedly simpler, why do so many single-person households report difficulties with meals and self-care?
-
Are the so-called “glamorous singles” truly enjoying the freedom and happiness commonly associated with them?
-
Are single-person households genuinely free from family obligations?
This talk will provide a multidimensional view of the lived experiences of single life across various age groups and social strata, challenging common assumptions and shedding light on the overlooked realities of solo living.
