We are pleased to announce the third regular colloquium of 2025.
[Seoul National University Institute of Legal Studies – Legal Theory Research Center 60th Colloquium]
"Manners as a Form of Citizenship"
*Date: Wednesday, May 21, 2025, 7:00 PM–9:00 PM
*Presenter: Geun-Chang Oh | Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, Seoul National University
*Presentation Summary:
This presentation aims to explore the concept of civic manners through a preliminary theoretical investigation. It will discuss the need to focus on everyday interactions and rituals within micro-level social structures in civic discourse. Additionally, it will examine two key functions of civic manners: the expressive function of revealing moral attitudes and the developmental function of cultivating civic virtues. Considering these functions, civic manners are more than just secondary etiquette; the discussion will address critiques that civic manners are overly formal and superficial. Finally, it will explore whether civic manners can contribute to fostering civic empathy and fraternity in an era of widespread political polarization, where hostility and discord are prevalent.
