<160th Thursday Colloquium of the Institute for Arts and Culture Studies – Distinguished Foreign Scholar Lecture>

*Date and Time: May 1, 2025 (Thursday), 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

*Location: Room 302, 3rd Floor, Sin-Yang Humanities Research Information Center (Building 4), Seoul National University

*Speaker: Klaus Vieweg (Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena)

*Lecture Topic: Hegels Ästhetik der Malerei – Die Wiederentdeckung der niederländischen Malerei des Goldenen Zeitalters (Hegel's Aesthetics of Painting – The Rediscovery of Dutch Painting of the Golden Age)

*Interpreter: Dae-Sung Jung (Yonsei University)

*Lecture Summary:
Hegel regarded late 17th-century Dutch portraiture, landscapes, and genre paintings as modern art. His aesthetic evaluation contributed to the fundamental reevaluation and revival of Dutch painting in the 19th century. Through his assessments of the late Dutch School, Hegel sought to justify its aesthetics and highlight its modernity, positioning this art as a revolutionary shift from the glorification of antiquity (classicism) or Christian medievalism (late romanticism) to an art of modernity—an art of freedom and liberated spirituality. Hegel's philosophy of art integrates philosophy and art history, establishing him as a pioneer of modern aesthetics of painting. He worked collaboratively with art experts and contributed new perspectives on art history and the revolutionary impact of the late Dutch School.

*Speaker's Background:
Professor Klaus Vieweg teaches German Classical Idealism Philosophy at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. His research and lectures span cities including Seattle, Prague, Pisa, Vienna, Mexico City, Kyoto, Tokyo, Rome, Shanghai, Valparaíso, Santiago, and Beijing. He explores Hegel’s philosophy as centered on the notion of freedom and elucidates its contemporary relevance. Professor Vieweg has achieved significant results in practical freedom philosophy and the history and theory of skepticism. Additionally, he actively investigates and edits original works and lecture notes of German idealists, particularly Hegel. In 2022, he officially authenticated fragments of lecture notes by F.W. Carové, discovered at the Munich Freising Archbishop Archive, as records of Hegel’s lectures. These documents span over 5,000 pages, and he serves as editor-in-chief for their forthcoming publication. Recently, he published a study focusing on Hegel’s aesthetic philosophy that rediscovered the significance of 17th-century Dutch painting.
