Abstract
Chunks, prefabricated expressions, complex constructions: The role of multiword units in second language acquisition

Multiword units are of particular relevance in language use: They are ubiquitous, highly frequent, and characterized by the fact that they are not formed and analyzed anew with each use, but are produced and perceived as a whole thus contributing to fluent and unobtrusive language processing. Therefore, multiword units fulfil an important cognitive relief function, both in the production and perception of language. Even if the various word combinations differ considerably from one another in terms of their origin, complexity, strength, function and frequency, they are alike not only in terms of their prefabricatedness and customary use, but also with respect to their remarkable communicative effectiveness (cf. Aguado 2002; 2017; 2024). In my talk I would like to sketch out the current state of research in terms of multiword units and their status in language acquisition and language teaching. Of particular interest is the discussion of theoretical approaches according to which language acquisition takes place through language use. Also, I would like to make a didactic proposal consisting of five phases, ranging from noticing to transfer (cf. also Aguado 2012)
