The SNU Institute of Asian Studies invites you to the 17th East Asian Studies Lecture.
Title: The Art of Transaction: The Early Ming Empire’s Military Horse(軍馬) Issue and Its Diplomacy with Goryeo-Joseon
According to traditional Chinese historical narratives, the emperor of China pursued moral values such as benevolence (仁), righteousness (義), and propriety (禮) rather than national interests in international relations centered on the 册封 (investiture)–朝貢 (tributary) system, and did not unjustly pressure or threaten weaker neighboring states. However, the reality of early Ming relations with Goryeo-Joseon was entirely different. This lecture will examine the Ming Empire’s diplomatic reality by focusing on the "art of transaction" employed in acquiring military horses (軍馬) from Goryeo-Joseon, shedding light on how the Ming actively pursued national security and interests, even at the cost of pressuring and threatening weaker states.
