The Seoul National University Institute for Peace and Unification Studies will be hosting the 27th Peace Studies Forum featuring Professor Tae-Ung Baik from the University of Hawaii Law School on the topic of "The United Nations and Human Rights in North Korea."

The United Nations is currently conducting the fourth cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) for North Korea, spanning 2024-2025. This review includes a working group session from November 4 to 15, 2024, with a report to the Human Rights Council expected in 2025. North Korea has previously rejected all UPR recommendations in 2009 but accepted 114 recommendations in 2014 and 199 in 2019. Professor Baik’s lecture will cover the UN's human rights mechanisms, particularly focusing on the UPR and discussing pathways for improving North Korean human rights.
