The HK Mega-Asia Research Project Group and the Asia Regional Information Center are pleased to invite Professor Chul-Sung Lee (Sogang University/University of Chicago) to present his work on Sticky Capitalism: How Rice Shaped East Asian Societies.
Professor Lee will present his latest work, Sticky Capitalism: How Rice Shaped East Asian Societies. This book introduces ‘rice theory’ to the comparative study of culture and development. In particular, it explores how East Asians developed their unique states and social institutions during their struggle to cultivate rice in harsh ecological environments. This book thus explains how crops and humans interact to sustain themselves under unique environmental conditions. Within this interactive ecology/human framework, Sticky Capitalism: How Rice Shaped East Asian Societies, explores how actors in rice societies mobilize their human resources. Such efforts will elucidate how rice societies were either able to or failed to achieve the same goals of developed, democratic, and egalitarian societies.
