[National Future Strategy Institute] SBS D FORUM 2024: "Era of Division and Extinction, Rewriting Survival Strategies"

Nov 12, 2024

You are invited to the SBS D FORUM 2024, co-hosted by the National Future Strategy Institute at Seoul National University and the SBS Cultural Foundation. This year's forum is themed "Era of Division and Extinction: Rewriting Survival Strategies." The discussions will focus on South Korea's direction and national strategies post-U.S. presidential election, industrial strategies in the era of population decline, solutions for regional depopulation issues, and the potential of immigration as an alternative. These topics will be examined from national, societal, corporate, and environmental perspectives.

We are at a critical turning point, where optimism about a sustainable future seems difficult. We invite you to join this event to discuss how we can survive differently and coexist in this challenging era. We hope that the collective wisdom shared at this year's forum will help us create new narratives together. Your participation in this year's SBS D Forum would be greatly appreciated.

PART 01 - Session 02: National Future Strategy Institute, Seoul National University

Research Presentation ① - Prosperity Strategies in a Shrinking Society: Conditions for an Attractive Nation

The result of the U.S. presidential election is expected to shake the global order once again. There is no clear solution for the conflicts in the Middle East and the South China Sea, and the U.S.-China rivalry over technological dominance and economic security remains intense. As international instability increases, South Korea, as a major trading nation, faces significant political and economic costs. A proactive response strategy that seeks national interests and global economic prosperity is essential. The foremost requirement for continued economic prosperity is technological prowess and securing talent with those skills. However, since 2015, South Korea's fertility rate has been declining, and the industrial foundation of second-tier cities like Busan is also weakening due to youth population outflow. Transitioning to advanced strategic industries, such as artificial intelligence and secondary batteries, requires that the issues of immigration and foreign migration are no longer postponed. In this era of societal contraction, we must explore the conditions that make a nation attractive for future prosperity.
