[Institute for Japanese Studies] The Present and Future of Korean-Japanese Studies

Sep 10, 2024

In the 30 years following the end of the Cold War and the advent of globalization, the concept of 'region' has undergone a dramatic redefinition. Consequently, the systems of knowledge concerning 'region'—that is, the field of 'area studies'—are being newly configured, crossing and re-crossing boundaries. We are entering an era of 'post-area studies.'

Against this backdrop, to explore the 'future of Japan' and the 'future of Japanese studies,' the Institute of Japanese Studies at Seoul National University is hosting a series of seven lectures with leading experts in their respective fields to mark its 20th anniversary.

The fourth lecture in this series will be given by Professor Noriko Ichiji of Osaka Prefectural University. We invite your interest and participation in this event.

Title: 在日コリアン研究のこれまでとこれから (The Past and Future of Zainichi Korean Studies)

 Language: Japanese

Abstract: The nationalities or roots of residents in Japan have become increasingly diverse, and despite the presence of terms like 'Zainichi Chinese' or 'Zainichi Vietnamese,' the term 'Zainichi' commonly refers to 'Zainichi Koreans.' Research on Zainichi Koreans in modern Japanese history has diversified in response to historical periods, with an increasing number of international researchers involved. Recently, the term 'Zainichi' in English journals and international conferences has become synonymous with Zainichi Koreans. Who exactly does 'Zainichi Korean' refer to? The criteria for defining this term have expanded over time, including factors such as nationality, place of origin, residence history, visa status, and identity. For example, research subjects now include people who came to Japan before the liberation, as well as those who returned to Japan after the liberation or came as a result of marriage. This lecture will examine these changes in Zainichi Korean studies and review future prospects based on the evolving phenomena within Zainichi Korean society.
