Social Media Use and Inspiration: Seeing Ourselves as Part of the Whole

Presentation Overview:
Questions surrounding the effects of social media on well-being have often focused on harms, including
bullying, isolation, and disordered self-images. At the same time, a burgeoning body of research has
drawn attention to how media (including social media) may be harnessed for purposes of social good,
including increased charitability, altruism, and compassion. Perhaps the most studied means of inducing
these outcomes is through users’ emotional responses. Specifically, eliciting self-transcendent affective
reactions such as awe or elevation appears to be particularly effective. Importantly, although notions of
well-being frequently focus on the self (e.g., self-perception, feelings of self-worth), self-transcendent
emotion shift the focus away from the self and toward a greater recognition of others, the world, or even
the universe. This talk will provide an overview of this line of research, providing supportive evidence and
also discussing its limitations.

About the Presenter:
Mary Beth Oliver is the Bellisario Professor of Media Studies in the Department of Film/Video & Media
Studies and co-director of the Media Effects Research Lab at the Pennsylvania State University. Her
research focuses on entertainment psychology and on the intersection of media with emotion and social
cognition. She is co-editor on several books, including “Media Effects: Advances in Theory and
Research,” and “The Sage Handbook of Media Processes and Effects,” and is co-author of the recent
book “Introduction to Positive Media Psychology.” In 2014 she was elected as a fellow of the International
Communication Association, in 2017 was awarded the Aubrey Fisher Mentorship Award, and in 2021-
2022 she served as President of ICA.

From Participation to Dark Participation - and Beyond

Presentation Overview:
Online participation was greeted with optimism and hopes for democratic rejuvenation by academics
around the globe a mere 20 years ago. However, many of the early expectations were not fulfilled. On the
contrary, scholars are now discussing destructive forms of “dark participation” that serve malicious
purposes and undermine democracy. This may be sign of an academic frustration with reality not meeting
their early normative projections - but maybe also a sign of the state of democratic societies these days.

The presentation will sketch the development of the discussion in the last 20 years, and offer a few ideas
on how to proceed from here.

About the Presenter:
Thorsten Quandt is Full Professor of Online Communication at the University of M?nster, Germany. His
work focuses on societal changes connected to the Internet and new media. Recent research includes
studies on “dark participation”, online propaganda, dysfunctional online use and the transformation of
journalism. His research group’s approaches and methods operate at the intersection of communication
studies, psychology, and data science. Previous academic stations include the University of Hohenheim,
the Free University Berlin and LMU Munich, and he was a visiting professor at Stanford University, the
University of Oxford and the University of California (Santa Barbara). Currently, he’s a visiting professor at
the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.
