Professor Sung Hoon Kim (Department of Molecular Medicine and Biopharmaceutical Sciences) has received the 2015 Hoam Award in Medicine for his contributions to greater understanding of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase. Professor Kim first started researching aminoacyl-tRNA in 1994 when he returned to Korea after his postdoc at MIT. Since then, Professor Kim has discovered that aminoacyl-tRNA deters cancer and is involved in differentiation. He also discovered that KRS, an enzyme involved in synthesizing lysine and tRNA, is responsible for cancer metastasis and found a material which deters the process. Professor Kim co-founded Cubist Pharmaceuticals, the company responsible for the sale of tedizolid phosphate (Sivextro). “I am happy that basic science research can lead to saving more lives,” said Professor Kim.
