Keratoprostheses and Artificial Corneas, a famous US textbook on keratoprostheses
Seoul-type keratoprostheses (Seoul KPro) developed by SNU Hospital was allotted an entire chapter in Keratoprostheses and Artificial Corneas, a famous US textbook on keratoprostheses. This is the first time a surgical technology developed in Asia was introduced in Keratoprostheses and Artificial Corneas, and shows that Seoul KProis widely recognized as the textbook approach to ocular surface diseases. Seoul KPro was originally designed for use in severe ocular surface disease in Asians. The main difference between the conventional keratoprosthesis and Seoul KPro is the method of fixation. Seoul KPro uses a method of double fixation to the eyeball to improve its biostability. Professor Emeritus LEE JinHak (School of Medicine) first started developing Seoul KPro in 1991 and the final product using polypropylene skirt was completed in 1999.
