Professor KWON Sunghoon Found a Faster Way to Diagnose Antibiotic Resistance

Professor KWON Sunghoon’s research team (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering), along with SNU Hospital and QuantaMatrix Inc., have developed a rapid antibiotics susceptibility test which only requires a maximum of three hours. Conventional antibiotics susceptibility tests required a minimum of 16 to 24 hours, making doctors wait overnight to determine a diagnosis. The research team developed single-cell morphological analysis (SCMA) using proprietary microfluidic chips and an automated imaging system for high throughput measurement. This enables researchers to observe bacterial division events which are sufficient to determine the susceptibility of antimicrobial drugs.
