SNU Center for Advanced Research in Fusion Reactor Engineering
The SNU Center for Advanced Research in Fusion Reactor Engineering (CARFRE) has been designated one of the leading engineering research centers in the country by the Ministry of Education. CARFRE, which opened in 2008, has received a total of 8,000,000,000 KRW from the government in research funds during the last seven years. CARFRE’s aim is to develop critical technology needed to create nuclear fusion reactors. Its current research topics include fusion reactor plasma diagnosis using a self-created tokamak fusion test reactor. A joint research project with the SNU Department of Nuclear Engineering on the effect of nuclear fusion neutrons on materials is also ongoing. CARFRE’s success is in part due to continuous funding of 33,000,000,000 KRW a year, which most university research labs find hard to obtain.
