Recipients of the Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship for 2014
Professor CHUN Byung-Gon (Department of Computer Science and Engineering) received the Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship for 2014 on July 14. The Fellowship is a prestigious award given to young professors who have shown outstanding research results in computer engineering. Professor Chun is the first (Asia-based) Asian recipient of this award. This year, seven engineers were selected and were awarded USD 100,000 in research funds. Professor Chun’s main area of research is operating and networked systems with emphasis on big data and mobile systems. His recent work is REEF (Retainable Evaluator Execution Framework) – a platform which facilitates the efficient analysis of big data. Last January, he made public REEF as open-source software, and companies have adopted it for cloud services. “It is my vision to develop a Big Data OS so anyone can analyze big data easily and quickly,” he said. “Software enables one idea to change the world.”
