Professor Chung Chinsung
Professor Chung Chinsung (Department of Sociology) brought to the world’s attention the existence of 'comfort women (wianbu)' at the UN Human Rights Committee twenty-two years ago. “We have come very far since then,” she said in an interview with Maeil Business Newspaper as she recalled how many Koreans disapproved of her for bringing up shameful history. From the early 1990s she participated in the Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan and led the UN General Assembly to adopt a resolution urging Japan to take responsibility for its atrocities. “I was interested in women’s rights as I grew up in a society which overlooked daughters in favor of sons. There were so few female students back then, so I decided to study women’s rights,” said Professor Chung. In 2005 she established the Korea Center for United Nations Human Rights Policy and is currently working on projects to protect immigrant women’s rights.
