Seoul National University established Exemplary Service to Society Award in 2011 to honor the faculty members who are engaged in social problems and committed to helping other people. The award is granted annually by the university president.

Dr. Lee was called to lead the Adama Science & Technology University (ASTU) in Ethiopia, upon retiring from Seoul National University faculty in 2011. He devoted five years to enhance higher education in Ethiopia as the ASTU president.
