KIM Junki, Dean of the Office of International Affairs (OIA) of SNU, visited Peking University (PKU) on May 18. KIM met LI Yang Song, assistant president and head of the Office of International Relations of PKU, and discussed the practical measures to be taken for the implementation of the new joint degree program between the two universities. The SNU-PKU joint degree program was earlier agreed upon by the respective university presidents last October at BESETOHA (a forum in which four representative East Asian Universities -- SNU, PKU, the University of Tokyo and Hanoi National University -- meet to discuss the present state and future directions of university education, basic education and educational culture) held in Vietnam and at the conference of Association of East Asian Research Universities held in China.

SNU and PKU signed an MOU in 1993 and have exchanged students since 2001, although the quota for the program was one. KIM and LI also discussed increasing this number of exchange students to five and agreed to exempt dormitory fees for mutual students, beginning in 2012. Additionally, as the OIA is working on a short-term study abroad program that will send SNU students to Beijing during the vacation, KIM asked for PKU’s cooperation.

Along with CAMPUS ASIA (a joint dual degree program run by the respective educations ministries of Korea, China, and Japan), this meeting is expected to activate a more vigorous academic interchange between SNU and PKU.
