Economy and Culture of a Modern China

Fudan University, Shanghai, July 7-18, 2008

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Fudan University will host the 3rd APRU Undergraduate Summer Program 2008 for a period of two weeks, from July 7 to 18, 2008.  Centered on the theme “Economy and Culture of A Modern China”, the program targets undergraduates who have economics background/ are economics major, and are interested in China’s economic landscape and culture.
Lessons will be conducted in English together with a daily half-hour basic Chinese language lesson - an initiative to provide more exposure for participants to the Chinese language and culture.  This program is also featured with a variety of activities conducted outside the classroom such as martial arts lesson, Beijing opera appreciation and field trips to places of interest such as the Shanghai Museum and Hangzhou (co-organized by Fudan and Zhejiang University).

UNIVERSITY NOMINATION AND ACADEMIC CREDITS
Each APRU member university may nominate up to two undergraduate students for the undergraduate summer program. The program offers 3 credits by Fudan’s GPA system.  (Please refer to Annex C for the preliminary program schedule.)  
Participants will be required to submit an essay on a topic related to the theme to: aprufudan@fudan.edu.cn, prior to the farewell dinner on March 18.  They will be graded by teachers at Fudan University and transcripts will be sent to them after the program ends.

REGISTRATION FEE
Every participant shall pay the registration fee of RMB 1,200 upon arrival (no later than July 7), which covers housing expenses during the program, field trips, special dinners and local transportation. Fudan University will provide a receipt to each participant.

ACCOMMODATION
Arrangements for accommodation on campus from July 6 to 19 will be made by Fudan University.  Two students will share one standard room with air-conditioning and Internet access. (It’s highly recommended that participants bring their own laptops for writing the final essay which is a program requirement.)  Costs for extended stay are chargeable and will be borne by the students.  Participants who wish to book accommodation for a longer stay (before/after July 6-19) will have to inform Fudan University in advance.

OTHER EXPENSES
Participants will need to pay for airfare, food, laundry and extra-day accommodation during the non-summer school time.  It is highly recommended that participants buy insurance before their departure.
The average cost for a meal in the campus cafeteria is 5 to 8 RMB (0.6 to 1 USD). For their  convenience, participants are strongly advised to bring along credit cards and exchange their home currency for some Chinese Yuan/Renminbi (China’s currency) in their own countries before arriving in China.

TRANSPORTATION
Information on transportation from the Shanghai Pudong airport to Fudan University’s campus and the campus map will be circulated separately to each participant before the summer program starts via email. Transportation by local bus, metro and elevated railway cost between 2 to 6 RMB (0.6 to 0.8 USD). It costs 30 to 40 RMB (4 to 5 USD) from campus to downtown. Transportation for field trips and excursions included in the program will be arranged by Fudan University.

APPLICATION AND SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION FORMS
Interested undergraduates can apply to the International Relations Office in their home university.  Each APRU member university has the discretion to select and send up to two undergraduate students for the APRU Undergraduate Summer Program 2008.  All application forms (please refer to Annex A) should reach Fudan University by May 16, 2008 via: (i) Email address: aprufudan@fudan.edu.cn, (ii)  Fax: +86-21-65649524 (addressed to Ms Iris WANG, Fudan University)

VISA APPLICATION
Participants should check if they require VISA F (business/visit visa) to enter China. If VISA F is necessary, please complete the form attached at Annex B. If not, participants can apply for VISA L (travel visa) at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in their own countries.
