Professor SONG Jaeyong and Professor LEE Kyungmook of the College of Business at SNU recently became the first professors from a Korean university to publish a paper in the Harvard Business Review.

The Harvard Business Review, a prestigious academic journal in the field of business administration and management, leads the trends in business administration worldwide. It has a large circle of readers, most of whom are scholars, businessmen, and consultants.

In a paper titled “The Paradox of Samsung’s Rise,” Professors Song and Lee collaborated with the world-renowned scholar Tarun Khanna to analyze the reasons for Samsung’s success as well as the company’s influence. Out of the three paradoxes that are pointed out as the factors in heightening Samsung’s competitiveness, the article focuses especially on the ‘hybrid management system of Samsung,’ which is a mix of the strengths of both the Japanese and American models of business management. It is unusual for the Harvard Business Review to publish a paper that analyzes a single company. This is only the third time since the year 2000 that an analysis of an Asian firm has been published, following the analyses of Toyota and Singapore Airlines.

Professor Song Jaeyong specializes in management strategies, having earned his PhD from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and later taking up posts at Columbia University and Yonsei University before coming to SNU. He has had numerous papers published in renowned journals such as Management Science, Organization Science, and Strategic Management Journal. Professor Song was also included in the top 30 business gurus of Korea, selected in 2010 by Maeil Business News, and has received a number of awards such as the SNU Educator Award, the Yonsei University Award for Professors with Excellent Achievements, the Barry M. Richman Best Dissertation Award from the Academy of Management and the Chazen Teaching Award from Columbia University.

Professor Lee Kyungmook specializes in the field of personnel organization and also holds a PhD from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. His works have been seen in the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, and many other well-known business journals.
