Enjoy Sport Climbing Right on Campus

Break out of your everyday routine and add more adventure to your life. Take risks and you will experience thrills.

There is no need to go far away to challenge yourself and have fun. There is an artificial cliff next to Building No.75-1 (also known as the SNU News Office Building). It is about 10 meters high and has several routes which vary from beginner to intermediate level. Seen from the bottom, it doesn’t look very high. Upon reaching beyond the halfway point, however, you will soon realize it is tougher and higher than expected.

For sport climbing, there must be at least 2 people, one climber and one belayer. Because of the belaying system, sport climbing is not as dangerous as generally believed to be. A rope is connected between the climber and the belayer. While the climber ascends by grabbing and stepping onto the ‘holds’ (that are fixed on the cliff), the belayer holds the rope to exert friction so that a falling climber does not fall very far. The belaying system is also used for the climber to rappel.

The color and shape of the ‘holds’ are all different, and there are various ways to grab them. Thus, once you move beyond the beginner level, you can find your own way to climb through ‘route finding’. If you possess all the equipment needed and know how to climb, just come and enjoy climbing. In the case that you do not already have the equipment and know-how, you can join the SNU Alpine Club and learn the A to Z of climbing.

The SNU Alpine Club has enthusiastic members who love climbing mountains as well. They climb the artificial cliff on campus once or twice a week, and go trekking or rock climbing on the mountains in the Seoul metropolitan area once a month. For more information, contact snualpineclub@gmail.com.
