The Inauguration of Seoul National University's 28th President, Dr. Honglim Ryu

The inaugural ceremony of Dr. Honglim Ryu, the 28th president of Seoul National University, was held on February 8, 2023 (Wed) at the auditorium of the Gwanak Campus Cultural Center. More than 300 people attended the ceremony, including the former president, dean, professors, student representatives, and faculty, as well as the presidents of national and private universities, and members of the National Assembly's Education Committee. President Honglim Ryu began his four-year term as president on February 1 (Wed).

In his inauguration speech, President Honglim Ryu said, "Considering the internal and external crises and challenges that Korea faces, our university has a serious responsibility," stressing, "Seoul National University needs a major innovation to confront the era of the Great Transformation." In order to lay the foundation for innovation and transformation, President Honglim Ryu suggested practical measures such as fostering "Seoul National University talent," establishing an ecosystem of innovation, and a new social contribution model linked to philanthropy. President Ryu then emphasized that “creative education and research will result to public trust, and Seoul National University will create new knowledge and value for humanity for the country and society and create ‘a platform of freedom and trust’ together.”

After graduating from Seoul National University (1984), President Honglim Ryu received a doctorate in political science (1994) from Rutgers University in the United States and served for 28 years (1995-2023) as a professor of the department of Political Science and International Relations at Seoul National University. President Honglim Ryu served as dean of Seoul National University's College of Social Sciences, director of Seoul National University Archives, editor of Seoul National University Press, president of the Korean Society for Political Thought, visiting professor of political science at Rutgers University, and visiting scholar at Harvard-Yenching Institute.
