Dressed for success: soft gel cloaked in membrane can snap brick

Hyeonuk Na and colleagues at Seoul National University harnessed a similar idea to strengthen hydrogels. They first wrapped a half a millilitre of hydrogel with a stiff, flexible membrane. Similar to a plant cell, the membrane was semi-permeable, so the hydrogel could absorb water and swell, mimicking turgor pressure.
