[Workshops] College English Program Writing Center

Apr 03, 2008 - Apr 28, 2008

The College English Program Writing Center is providing a series of workshops throughout the semester to help students improve their English skills. Each workshop deals with a different theme and students can register for those that interest them online.

Using Citations Correctly and Avoiding Plagiarism in Social Science Writing
Avoiding plagiarism and using references can be difficult. This workshop will focus on how students can use the words and ideas of other researchers in their own writing. It will cover techniques for citing, quoting, and paraphrasing correctly in research writing. It will also address ambiguous situations, such as when to cite an individual’s own previous work, and when information can be considered general knowledge that doesn’t require citation.

1. Presenter: Jocelyn Graf
2. Date and Time: Monday, April 28th 2008, 15:00 ~ 18:00
3. Place: Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), Bldg 61, Rm 320
4. About the presenter:
Jocelyn Graf, M.A. Applied Linguistics, has experience teaching English academic and professional writing to professors and graduate students in Chicago, and to business managers at HSBC Bank in Mexico and Samsung Group in Korea. She is the Assistant Director of the English Writing Center in Hanyang University’s Center for Teaching and Learning. She also offers editing and translation services.

Computer-Assisted English Writing Skills for Journal Article Publication
This workshop will teach students how to use advanced functions of software they already have on your computer to dramatically improve their English writing ability. It is designed specifically for those who want to publish their research articles in English in international journals.
With a hands-on, practical experience in a computer room, students will learn by application of skills and not just by listening. Participants will learn how to fix grammar mistakes using specialized search techniques, find exact expressions that are correct in their respective fields and not just in general English words, rapidly find example sentences of how words are used in the specific fields rather than in general dictionaries and finally, keep them for future reference.
To learn to use the system, participants should bring a CD or a USB to the workshop with as many Research Article PDF files downloaded from Journals in their field as they can. Ten papers are enough to learn how to use the system, 100 PDF file papers are enough to have as a reference for writing in the future.

3. Location: Building 3, Room 212, English Multimedia Lab
