Professor Byung-Gon Chun and Microsoft’s co-developed big-data meta-analysis framework was selected as a ‘Top Level Project’ of the Apache Software Foundation. The framework, named ‘Retainable Evaluator Execution Framework (REEF),’ simplifies and unifies the lower layers of big data systems on modern resource managers. REEF provides a centralized control plane abstraction that can be used to build a decentralized data plane for supporting big data systems. Special consideration is given to graph computation and machine learning applications, both of which require data retention on allocated resources to execute multiple passes over the data. The Apache Software Foundation is a decentralized community of developers. The Apache projects are characterized by a collaborative, consensus-based development process and the software they produce is free and open source software.
