On the Occasion of the Conferment of an Honorary Doctorate
Upon Professor N. L. Gault, Jr.
Luncheon Remarks
President Un-Chan Chung
23 September 2004
Distinguished guests, respected colleagues, ladies and gentlemen:
Good afternoon, and please allow me to take this occasion to thank all of you once again for taking time out of your busy schedules to join us here today.
We gather here, of course, to celebrate Professor Gault's exemplary accomplishments over a long and distinguished career in the field of medicine. As a leading medical scientist, educator and administrator, Dr. Gault has earned abiding respect from his colleagues, devotion from his disciples, and wide international acclaim for his good works in various corners of the world.
Dr. Gault is presently emeritus professor of medicine and emeritus dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School. In recognition of Dr. Gault's lifetime achievements, the University of Minnesota established the N.L. Gault International Medical Education and Research Foundation in the year 2000.
We here at Seoul National remember Dr. Gault for his vital contribution in rebuilding the very foundations of our College of Medicine. But his connection with our university does not end there. From 1959 to 61, a critical period in our university's growth in the immediate post-Korean War years, Dr. Gault served as the overall advisor for the University of Minnesota - Seoul National University exchange program. In this capacity, his vision and leadership made possible extensive faculty exchanges in between our two universities, with more than 200 SNU faculty members being sent to the University of Minnesota for further education and advanced training. Eleven University of Minnesota faculty, in turn, came to Korea during those days to be advisors in our university.
I could easily go on listing the countless accomplishments associated with Dr. Gault's name. But I will simply say that, as president of Seoul National University, it gives me great pleasure to present the honorary doctoral degree to Dr. Gault for his lifetime caring and contribution to the development of this university. I know all of my faculty colleagues, present and past, join me in expressing our gratitude to you in this modest, but heart-felt manner.
Thank you, Dr. Gault.
