“Baseball isn’t played alone. It’s a team effort. In baseball, throwing an accurate ball to my teammates is a basic level of being considerate and respectful. You could also come out early to rake the infield, even though you’re an outfielder, for instance. Considerate behavior is found in the relationship between pitchers and catchers, between infielders and outfielders. There are also sacrifice bunts.. And you shouldn’t swing early in the count when there’s a man on base who can steal, right? So, you take the first two pitches. I know SNU students all excel academically, but here you need to learn something different. You need to treat the team’s equipment as if it was your own. Baseball is about the right attitude in all aspects of the game. It’s not just about throwing balls. We all build upon this tradition, right? Okay, good job today!“ (Text: 1 win, 1 tie, 265 losses) This is SNU baseball team’s record over 36 years. Certainly, it’s not a record we’re proud of, but we’re not ashamed of it either. This is because although we always try our best to win, we don’t play just to win. If someone was to ask when our next win will be, our answer would be, “We’re not sure” For us, how we play the game is as important as winning. As university students, our studies come first; next is the daily life; and third is baseball. Our baseball uniforms have no names on the back, just numbers. That’s because we mend and wear the old uniforms our seniors used. The same goes for the rest of our equipment (Text: LEE Kwang Hwan, Head Coach of SNU baseball team Former manager of Korean professional baseball teams – LG Twins, HanHwa, Eagles, and Woori Heroes) Our head coach is the first one out to the field to water and pick out stones. He says it hurts him the most when players injure themselves because of a field in poor condition. Once, we took a two-hour bus ride to have a match with hearing-impaired teenagers. We left with our hearts overwhelmed by them. Seeing them play baseball, overcoming the obvious difficulties, was a humbling experience. “Thank you!” (Text: A friendly Match with hearing-impaired players at Choongjuseongshim School in 2012) Playing baseball teaches us something that cannot be found in books (Text: 2012 Fall National Tournament of University Baseball – 1st Round Seoul National University vs Cheju Tourism College) No matter how talented an opposing team may be, we maintain our confidence and meet them head on. Though we may not be able to match their skills, knowing that our peers cheer us on make us never feel lonely or afraid. Though we resent when our opponents take us lightly, we keep focused on our goal, no matter what (Text: SNU once led the game 1-0, however, game was called in the 7th as 1-11. The team gave full applause to the senior players for whom this was their last.) If we’re asked why we keep playing baseball despite the endless defeats We reply, “As students, we are learning.” Even though we fall, again and again, we learn what it means and what it takes to get up anew Though we may not achieve what we want We will never stop striving. For we are Seoul National University Baseball Team
