First Recipient of Kim Jae Ik Scholarship to Be a Pakistani Student

Pakistani ambassador and SNU President

H. E. Shaukat Ali Mukadam, the Pakistani ambassador to the Republic of Korea, visited SNU President OH Yeon Cheon on April 11 to discuss the cooperation of the two countries in the field of education.

Ambassador Mukadam stressed the close relationship of South Korea and Pakistan by pointing out the fact that over 10,000 Pakistani workers and 238 Pakistani students reside in Korea.

Ambassador Mukadam added that Pakistani people in general have very positive images of Korea and the Korean people, and that the Pakistani government is preparing to increase the number of Pakistani students studying in Korea to 500 students.

President Oh responded that SNU is planning to make a Pakistani student the first ever recipient of the Kim Jae Ik Scholarship for International Students. The Kim Jae Ik Scholarship Fund was established when Ms. Lee Soon Ja, wife of the deceased Mr. Kim Jae Ik who was an esteemed economist and government official who led Korea’s economic growth in the early 80s, donated their life’s savings to educate students from the least developed countries.

President Oh is also considering concluding an exchange agreement with the University of Karachi in Pakistan, Ambassador Mukadam’s alma mater.
